UNWTO and WYSE Travel Confederation Launch Global Declaration to Promote Youth Travel

Global Organisations join forces to Encourage Governments and Businesses to Tap into Huge Potential of Youth Tourism.
Over 700 delegates from 63 countries meeting at the World Youth and Student Travel Conference (WYSTC) in San Diego, USA have called on governments and businesses worldwide to tap into the potential of youth travel in light of its capacity to boost tourism growth and global development, a call supported by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
This recommendation and others were included in the landmark San Diego Declaration, the product of a wide-ranging consultation with the Members of the World Youth Student & Educational (WYSE) Travel Confederation as they tweeted, emailed, voted and posted their suggestions in San Diego on the priorities for youth travel in the coming decades.
UNWTO estimates that youth travel generates in excess of US$ 185 billion in international tourism receipts, with much of the growth being led by emerging markets and a resolve by young people in advanced economies to continue travelling despite economic uncertainty.
20% of the 990 million international tourists traveling the world in 2011 were young people,” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, opening the three-day conference. “These young travellers are environmentally-aware and tend to stay longer and interact more closely with the communities they visit than the average tourist. As such, youth travel has emerged as one of the most promising paths towards a more responsible and sustainable tourism sector.”
Director General of WYSE Travel Confederation, Espen Falkenhaug was delighted with the Declaration, saying, “Youth travel plays an ever increasing role in driving the positive growth of the travel industry as a whole. We are delighted to join forces with UNWTO to take this vital message to governments on behalf of our members, and the young people whose aspirations they serve. Research continues to show that young travellers contribute economic, cultural and social value to their chosen destination, as well as being enriched by the experience when they return home. Their unique experiences combine to make a huge difference in cultural understanding and our aim is to ensure that the San Diego Declaration will continue to advance these essential interactions.”
Tourism’s contribution to peace and global development is also highlighted in the Declaration which underlines the positive contribution youth travel can make towards the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, as they frequently seek to discover new cultures, spend money directly with local businesses or participate in volunteer programmes.

Global union federation backs criticism of Ryanair

The secretary for civil aviation of global union federation the ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) has backed criticism by an easyJet official of Ryanair’s treatment of its staff.

In an interview with Europa Press*, Javier Gándara, CEO of easyJet in Spain and Portugal, is reported as contrasting EasyJet’s commitment to its staff (as part of which it has relocated 90 per cent of its workers affected by the closure of its base at Madrid-Barajas Airport) with Ryanair’s, and stating that carriers should act in accordance with the labour laws of the countries in which they operate.

ITF civil avation secretary Gabriel Mocho commented: “In our view, Ryanair is achieving a commercial advantage at the expense of its own staff.

“Javier Gándara is right – Ryanair is well known for insisting that its personnel worldwide operate under Irish rules and so have no recourse under the laws of the countries in which they actually live and work.”

He continued: “That wilful blindness to reality is being regularly challenged by the trade unions that many Ryanair staff choose, and which Michael O’Leary wants to deny them.”

Those challenges include an ongoing complaint made to the International Labour Organization (ILO) by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), the Irish Municipal, Public and Civil Trade Union (IMPACT), and the Irish Airline Pilots Association (IALPA) against the Republic of Ireland for breach of ILO Convention 98 .

This complaint alleges that the conduct of Ryanair exposes a number of failures in Irish law to protect the rights of workers and trade unions for which the Irish government is responsible as a member of the ILO. In particular that Irish law fails to sufficiently guarantee the minimum standards as prescribed by ILO Convention 98, which Ireland ratified as long ago as 1955.

Protection of workers from acts of anti-union discrimination (Article 1);
Protection of workers’ organisations from acts of interference by employers (Article 2); and
Promotion of the principle of voluntary collective bargaining (Article 4).

Additionally, in a submission to the Universal Periodic Review Working Group of the United Nations, the ICTU has also complained that:
“Ireland is a champion of human rights abroad yet fails to adequately promote and protect human rights at home. Trade union rights are fundamental human rights but the trade union-human rights of all ‘workers’ is not properly respected. On foot of a problematic interpretation of Freedom of Association by the Irish Supreme Court in Ryanair, anti trade union activity, once the preserve of a few anti-union companies is now becoming widespread, jeopardising the basic human right of workers to organise in trade unions for the protection of their interests.”

Mind the guinea pig! Peru named South America's best destination for foodie breaks

In a part of the world famed for its cuisine, it was always going to be a tough call.
But Peru has beaten off stiff competition from its South American neighbours to be named the continent's Leading Culinary Destination.
The accolade was presented at the Caribbean and The Americas ceremony at the World Travel Awards, set up to 'acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry'.

The worldwide awards will be announced in December.
Other nominees for the South American prize included Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Maria del Carmen de Reparaz, director of tourism promotion for Peru, said: 'We’re delighted and honoured to have been recognised with such an accolade.
'Peruvian food combines authentic ingredients from the nation’s highlands, jungles and coastline together with culinary influences from Europe, the Far East and Africa and fully deserves its reputation as a gastronomic superpower.'
Peruvian cuisine - which includes quinoa, a staple with health enthusiasts - is growing in popularity on the world's gastronomic stage. The country has a long culinary history, dating back to the Incas and beyond.

From the rice, fowl and goat dishes in the north coastal regions, to the potato, sweetcorn, chilli pepper and guinea pig of the Andes, there's a gastronomic tradition to match every landscape.
Cultural changes have also helped to shape the cooking, with Spanish, Arab, African, Chinese and Italian influences infusing recipes.
This summer saw the opening of chef Virgilio Martinez's Lima London in Fitzrovia, and fellow native Gastón Acurio has launched restaurants in a number of South American capitals and farther afield in San Francisco and Madrid.

IATA:Demand Slowdown Continues

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported global traffic results for August showing demand for air transport continuing to flatten-out, but with significant regional variations. Freight volumes shrank as business and consumer confidence continued to slip.
Demand for air travel expanded by 5.1% in August compared to the same month in 2011. This partly reflects a positive distortion owing to the timing of Ramadan. Adjustment for such seasonal fluctuations reveals that passenger demand has been basically flat since June and with only a 1.2% expansion since January. Carriers continued to moderate capacity expansion, limiting it to 4.1% growth, taking load factors to 82.1%.
August air freight volumes fell 0.8% compared to the previous year. The minor recovery seen at the start of the year has faded quickly and the stability seen in freight markets during 2012 could be under threat owing to continued economic weakness. Middle East, African and North American carriers bucked the trend and remained in positive growth territory (11.3%, 10.2% and 2.0%, respectively). All other regions saw freight volumes decline, the most significant being for Asia-Pacific carriers at 5.5%.
Passenger markets have not grown since June and global air freight volumes are below previous year levels. In the face of these adverse conditions, disciplined capacity management has kept load factors high. There are always opportunities and some parts of the world are growing. But, overall, trading conditions are tough,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO.
August 2012 vs. August 2011 RPK Growth  ASK Growth PLF FTK Growth AFTK Growth
International                     5.3% 4.1% 82.1 -1.3% 0.7%
Domestic 4.8% 4.2% 82.3 2.2% -0.7%
Total Market 5.1% 4.1% 82.1 -0.8% 0.4%
YTD 2012 vs. YTD 2011 RPK Growth  ASK Growth PLF FTK Growth AFTK Growth
International                     6.6% 4.6% 79.1 -2.6% 1.5%
Domestic 4.5% 4.1% 79.7 1.0% -1.2%
Total Market 5.8% 4.4% 79.3 -2.1% 0.9%
International Passenger MarketsThe growth trend for international traffic remains weak, with overall expansion of 5.3% heavily dependent on seasonal factors. Compared to July, August growth was flat, and load factors were down. Asia-Pacific carriers appear particularly affected, as airlines face strong competition and shifting trade flows.
  • European airlines recorded strong demand growth in August (5.6%), ahead of the 4.7% expansion seen in July. Despite recession conditions in Europe, airlines in the region have continued to expand on international routes, growing capacity by 4.4%. Load factors rose marginally to 84.9%.
  • North American airlines saw just 0.5% growth in demand while capacity was reduced by 0.5% compared to the previous August. This increased load factors by 0.8 percentage points to 86.9%, comfortably the highest among the regions. Compared to July there was a 0.5% increase in demand.
  • Asia-Pacific carriers were among the weakest in terms of demand growth. They reported a 2.9% growth in demand compared to a year ago, which was an improvement on the 0.1% expansion recorded in July. However, the growth trend showed weakness month-on-month, with demand slipping 0.5% in August compared to July. Load factor rose to 79.4%.
  • Middle East carriers were once again the strongest performers, and continue to expand rapidly-- particularly on long-haul segments. However the August growth rate of 16.7% could have been boosted by the impact of Ramadan falling across the whole of August last year. Capacity expanded by 13.3% which took load factors to 78.4%.
  • Latin American airlines were the second-best performers in August, with demand rising 7.3% compared to the year-ago period. Growth outpaced capacity expansion of 5.8%, leading to load factors strengthening slightly to 78.2%.
  • African carriers’ demand rose 3.2%, while capacity climbed nearly twice as fast, up 6%. At 68.3%, the region’s load factor remains the weakest, falling 1.8 percentage points compared to a year ago.
Domestic Passenger MarketsOverall, domestic traffic grew by 4.8%, slightly ahead of a 4.2% rise in capacity. The domestic load factor stood at 82.3%. All markets, except India and Japan, showed growth compared to the previous August. Chinese domestic travel was the best performer.
  • Indian carriers, affected by the slowing economy and high-cost operating environment, saw domestic demand fall by 2.0% compared to the previous August. Capacity expanded by 0.7% and load factors slipped to 66.6%.
  • Japan’s domestic market continues to struggle. Demand fell 2.1% compared to last August, and the overall market continues to be about 10% below pre-earthquake and tsunami levels. Domestic load factor was 68.0%, which was 0.3 percentage points down on July.
  • Brazil’s economy appears to be on an upward trend and domestic travel was strong in August, growing 9.4%. This was also significantly above the capacity expansion of 1.7% which pushed the load factor to 73.0%.
  • Chinese domestic air travel was up 10.8% compared to the previous August. This reverses the sharp slowdown in the middle part of the year. However, growth was below the capacity expansion of 12.2%, and the load factor moderated to 83.6%.
  • US domestic demand grew 2.4% compared to the year-ago period. With capacity growth held to 1.4%, carriers reported a load factor of 86.7%, consistently the highest among the major domestic markets.
Air Freight (Domestic and International)
Compared to August 2011, freight demand fell by 0.8%, behind a capacity expansion of 0.4%, and declines in business confidence signal potential further weakness in the months to come. The strongest performers for air freight were carriers from the Middle East, Africa and (to a lesser extent) North America. Freight demand for Asia-Pacific, European, and Latin American airlines contracted compared to last August.

  • Middle East carriers saw an 11.3% increase in demand against a 10.4% increase in capacity. This was the strongest performance. North American carriers reported demand growth of 2.0% compared to the previous August, while capacity reduced by 2.3%. African airlines continued their positive growth for the year with a 10.2% increase in demand compared to an 8.1% increase in capacity.
  • Asia-Pacific airlines reported a 5.5% decline in demand outpacing the 3.1% trimming of capacity.European carriers showed a 0.8% decline in demand compared to August 2011, even as capacity grew by 1.9%. Latin American airlines recorded a 3.9% decline in demand while capacity grew by 14.0%.
The Bottom LineAt a global level, airline industry fortunes track developments in the global economy. “Sluggish growth in the US, the continuing sovereign debt crisis in Europe and concerns over the slowdown in the Chinese economy are taking their toll on both business and consumer confidence. Airlines have responded with, among other things, careful capacity management. While global passenger traffic was up 5.1% on the previous August, capacity increases trailed with a 4.1% expansion. Along with this, conserving cash and controlling costs are the focus of most airlines as they await more favorable economic conditions,” said Tyler.
IATA currently forecasts a collective $3.0 billion profit for airlines in 2012 for a 0.5% net margin.  On 1 October IATA will release a revised industry outlook.

RIU Hotels signs the Code against the Sexual Exploitation of Minors in Tourism

In Gran Canaria, Carmen Riu, CEO of RIU Hotels & Resorts, along with María Martínez Hernández from FAPMI-ECPAT Spain, signed the Code of Conduct against the commercial sexual exploitation of minors.
With this signature the hotel chain commits to fight against the sexual exploitation of boys, girls and teenagers in tourism through various actions, with the support and collaboration of FAPMI-ECPAT Spain, the body which is responsible for managing the Code in this country. The signing took place in the ExpoMeloneras Conference Centre in Maspalomas. This year, this tourist destination is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, and will be involved in the celebration of the 2012 World Tourism Day tomorrow.
María Martínez Hernández, FAPMI-ECPAT, has been responsible for welcoming the signing ceremony, which was witnessed by Consuelo Crespo, president of UNICEF in Spain; Marco Aurelio Pérez, Mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana; Ricardo Fernández of Puente Armas, Deputy Councillor of Tourism in the Canarian Government; Yolanda Perdomo, director of the Secretariat of Affiliated Members of the OMT; María Jesús Conde, representative of UNICEF in the Dominican Republic; and Nereida Castro, president of the Canarian UNICEF Committee.
As a result of the adherence of RIU to the Code of Conduct, a debate has been initiated on Tourism and Social Responsibility, “Fighting together against the sexual exploitation of minors in the tourism sector”, overseen by Consuelo Crespo, president of UNICEF Spain. Businesses in the sector and institutions have demonstrated their experience in the defence of the Children’s Rights, and in particular in the struggle against the sexual exploitation of minors.
The Sexual Exploitation of Boys, Girls and Teenagers in tourism is a growing problem which requires the intervention of all parties involved. Every year, more than 1.8 million minors worldwide find themselves forced to enter into commercial sexual exploitation. Tourism, given that it is the main industry worldwide, exerts economic, cultural, environmental and socio-political effects in the areas it operates, having a direct impact on the lives of boys, girls and teenagers in these communities.
The public authorities and the private sector have a legal and moral obligation to ensure that the protection of boys, girls and teenagers is incorporated into the agenda for development in tourism. The Code of Conduct for the protection of boys, girls and teenagers against commercial sexual exploitation is an international tool driven by the tourism industry concerned, in collaboration with ECPAT International, financed by UNICEF and with the support of the World Tourism Organisation. It acts as an instrument of self-regulation and Corporate Social Responsibility to provide additional protection to boys, girls and adolescents against commercial sexual exploitation in the tourism sector.
RIU Hotels & Resorts, in adhering to this initiative, promises to apply the following six criteria:
•           To establish a corporate ethical policy against the commercial sexual exploitation of minors.
•           To train staff in all the countries where they operate.
•           To introduce a clause in contracts with providers to establish common rejection of the commercial sexualexploitation of minors.
•           To supply information to customers by means of informative material and our website.
•           To supply information to “key local agents” in each destination.
•           To report annually on the implementation of these points.

RIU Hotels, by committing to these criteria, works in an active way in the fight against sexual tourism involving boys, girls and teenagers in the international hotel industry, by strengthening the networks and mechanisms to combat this problem.

USD 600 million Sharm Al Sheikh resort to be unveiled at Cityscape Global

Crystal Lagoons Corp. the patented technology developer of giant crystalline lagoons, returns to Cityscape Global this October, as the company’s Middle East & North Africa business continues to expand.
With major projects in five countries and over 40 locations around the region, Crystal Lagoons will be showcasing under-development initiatives in Jordan, Turkey and the UAE, as well as revealing its latest project, a second saltwater lagoon in the popular tourist resort of Sharm El Sheikh.
Our second Sharm El Sheikh project will be the centerpiece of a new US$600 million luxury resort being developed by leading Egyptian tourism company Radamis for Hotels & Touristic Resorts. Aimed at the high-end traveler, the resort covers 75 hectares with 2,500-rooms across three separate hotels and 2.7 hectare lagoon offering an unlimited selection of water sports”, said Kevin P. Morgan, the newly appointed CEO of Crystal Lagoons Corp.
The Radamis’ Sharm El Sheikh resort is Crystal Lagoons’ latest Egypt project with the company already licensing its technology in what will be the world’s largest manmade lagoon as part of the Citystars Sharm El Sheikh resort. This 12-hectare ‘mega lagoon’ will surpass the current Guinness Book of World Records holder, Chile’s San Alfonso del Mar resort, Crystal Lagoons’ first project.
Part of a mixed-use project developed in partnership with Egypt’s Golden Pyramid Group, Citystars Sharm El Sheikh will feature a series of 10 saltwater lagoons, covering a combined area of 100 hectares and including the world’s largest lagoon, to create a unique desert oasis and new tourism landmark for the region.
The development, which is currently under construction and expected to open before the end of the year, will offer 1.2 million square metres of residential units, hotels, golf courses, marinas, a museum and a commercial centre.
The Middle East and North Africa represents huge opportunity for Crystal Lagoons as investment in tourism infrastructure continues to grow. The UNWTO has forecast a respectable 3-4% growth for the region this year and ourportfolio of projects continues to attract attention from flagship tourism destinations across the Middle East,” remarked Morgan.
Our uniquely innovative concept is backed by patented technology and offers a strong competitive advantage that we believe will be the catalyst to revolutionize the leisure experience in the real estate and tourism markets,” he added.
Crystal Lagoons’ portfolio also includes The Dead Sea Lagoon in Jordan, a project in partnership with leading Jordanian real estate developer Sama Jordan. Located 31 kilometers from Amman, the US$160 million project includes 1,000 guestrooms and a three-hectare crystalline lagoon bordered by private white sand beaches.
The only global company with the technological capability to make the development of giant controlled manmade bodies of water economically viable, Crystal Lagoons is positioning itself as offering a unique product differentiator to high profile tourism projects around the world.
Our technology makes it possible for people to enjoy a taste of beach life in previously unimaginable places such as the desert or in the heart of major cities; and this has the potential to create new tourism hotspots and bring the leisure lifestyle directly to the market,” remarked Morgan.
Designed to be self-cleaning, the lagoons only require topping up in response to evaporation and use up to 100 times less chemicals than traditional pool systems, and only two per cent of the energy required by conventional filtering technologies.
The largest real estate event in the Middle East, Cityscape Global 2012 takes place from 2-4 October at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
