UK inbound tourism remains on track for record year

Across the first seven months of 2014 there were 7% more visits than during the same period in 2013, reaching a new record of 19.8 million visits, with spend of £11.3 billion (in nominal terms), according to new IPS figures released.

Britain received more holiday visits in the first seven months of 2014 than ever before, contributing to overall visit growth, including a record 1.6 million incoming holiday visits in July 2014.

Visits from the ‘Rest of World’ markets (those outside Europe and North America) clinched a new seven-month record of 2.94 million visits – up 1% on the previous record set between January to July last year.

Confidence from some of our key European neighbours is starting to return, with visit growth from the EU15 countries up by 8% in July. This group of countries includes two of Britain’s largest inbound tourism markets, France and Germany.

Patricia Yates, Director of Strategy and Communications, VisitBritain, commented: “Inbound visits to Britain remain on track for a record-breaking year in 2014. We are in a position of strength as we approach the peak summer months, with Holiday visits driving these records. VisitBritain will continue to bring together tourism businesses to grow Britain’s fifth largest industry and deliver jobs across the country.”
