Maui boasts most expensive destination in Hawaii

HONOLULU - Hawaii gets more visitors during Christmas and New Year's than it does any other time of the year, and hotel rates reach record heights as a result. A new survey from CheapHotels.org has compared the lodging costs for the most popular Hawaiian destinations.

Specifically, the survey has established the rate for the cheapest available double room for 16 destinations in the Aloha State. The period spanning December 23 through December 28 served as the comparative timeframe. Only such hotels rated at least three stars and located close to the beach have been considered by the survey.

With an average rate of $412 per day, Wailea, located on Maui's south shore, leads the rankings. Coming in second most expensive is Princeville. This vacation community situated on the north shore of Kauai is averaging $378 nightly over the holiday time period.

The state's least expensive destination is Hilo, located on the Big Island. There, overnight guests will find an average price tag of $139 for the least expensive double room. Also rather affordable is Hawaii's capital, Honolulu. Rooms there are running well below $200 per night right before, during and just after Christmas.

The survey found that hotel rates in Hawaii are increasing by an average of 47% during Christmas week (December 23–27, 2015) and by as much as 84% over New Year's Eve (December 30, 2015 to January 3, 2016) compared to the first two weeks in December.

The following table compares the lodging costs of 16 destinations in Hawaii.
