Staying on long term vacation seems to be true as Thailand is about to issue 10-year tourist visas for affluent tourists aged at least 50 years old. All they have to do is report to immigration police every 90 days.

The visa will be valid for five years initially and will have the option to be renewed for another five years.

Government spokesperson Sansern Kamkamnerd said that the practice of visa recipients reporting to immigration police every 90 days would ensure safety and security for both the tourists and the country. Post the verification, the renewals might be declined, although that seems to be much of a minimal chance.

Apart from the age requirement, visa applicants need to have a monthly income of no less than 100 000 baht (about R40 000) or at least 3 million baht (about R1.2-million) in the bank to be maintained for at least one year after being issued the visa.

Tourists from Australia, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Taiwan and the United States, are the targeted clients.

With the revised rule, the tourism authority is expecting promotion of medical and wellness tourism. Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Chon Buri and other famous seaside provinces will be the places for the visitors’ stay.

No exact date of implementation has been announced by the government, but officials said 10-year visas will soon be in effect, after related laws are amended.
