Over the last 10 years, the number of domestic tourists in Cambodia has almost doubled at a rate of about 5 to 7 percent every year, as indicated by the Tourism Ministry show.

It has been predicted that the home-grown tourists would be reaching about 10 million this year.

The figures are being driven mainly by the travellers who have been taking multiple trips, according to the data collected by the statistics department of the ministry. This is an increase of nearly 7% as compared to last year.

Siem Reap, the region that attracts a large number of visitors annually to cultural landmarks including the Cambodian Cultural Village theme park, Tonle Sap Lake and Angkor Wat. The other popular attractions included Sihanoukville that is the site of last week’s Sea Festival, Phnom Penh and some others, said Kong Sopheareak who is the department’s director.

The ministry has counted about 5.8 million local tourists in the year 2007.

The director of tourism department of the country who is named Kim Sereiroth said that the ever increasing diversification of the several tourist attractions, combined with the accessibility to the different sites and also the excellent infrastructure have been responsible for a  sudden boom in local visitors.

Kim said that Cambodia used to welcome fewer number of local tourists in the past.

However, thanks to the newly developed nature parks and the other tourism locales, the scenario of domestic tourism bears a positive outlook. Chhay Sivlin, the president of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents said that public safety and rising incomes had been motivating more local travellers to explore the country.

Sivlin also added that the stable economic growth definitely paves the way for better incomes. This is the reason why the tourists are so eager to make the most of the opportunity to explore the country.

She also said that a majority of the residents are fond of travelling independently.

However, domestic package tours were also quite popular for company trips who would be looking forward to travel in groups without having to arrange their own accommodation.
