American Airlines is planning to spend as much as nearly $6 million to upgrade the carry-in bag screening at eight U.S. airports.
This carrier is purchasing 3-D carry-on bag screeners and would deploy them at airports after the machines are completely certified by the Transportation Security Administration.
Currently, the TSA is testing the CT scanners built by the Massachusetts-based Analogic.

The 3-D scanners offers TSA agents a clear view of potential issues regarding bags, like those of explosives. But then, the machines are created to go twice as fast checking carry-on bags. Right now, the Department of Homeland Security is considering an extended period of laptop ban for international flights following intelligence leads indicating towards the probabilities of terrorists utilizing one or more laptops to detonate a bomb.
For the last few months, passengers on flights including the ones from Middle East to the US have been left with no alternative but to place laptop computers inside checked luggage.
