Nearly 600 tourists have been stranded on account of intense depression in the Bay of Bengal.
But 250 of them on Sunday have crossed the sea risking their lives, coming all the way from Teknaf from the island of Saint Martin on five trawlers. Necessary action would be taken against the owners of the trawler who has carried the tourists in such rough weather conditions as asserted by the authorities.
There have been heavy rains in the coastal regions owing to the depression in Bay of Bengal on Saturday.
The maritime ports and the coastal regions of Cox’s Bazar have been asked to hoist signal number-3. All the fishing boats and trawlers have been advised to remain in shelter till they receive further notice. But then the rain stopped on Sunday morning and it was followed by bright sunshine.
Ujjal Kanti Pal who is the assistant meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Met office mentioned that the strong depression has currently weakened for a low depression and was 675 kilometres away from Cox’s Bazar.
However the weather status continues to remain the same.
Md Syed Alam who is the general secretary of Teknaf service trawler owners’ association told the regional news media that travellers assembled at the Saint Martin’s island jetty around 9.30 a.m. after receiving a message that no ship would arrive from Teknaf on Sunday.
As many as 244 tourists were taken to Teknaf on five trawlers and they had paid 200 takas each.
Luckily no incident has occurred though the trawlers had to confront with high seas and they all arrived in Teknaf safely.
Syed Alam said that 201 passengers were tourists and 43 were regional inhabitants.
